Plan for Life / Winter 2010

How and why I became Snow White

"I used to be Snow White, but I drifted." So said Mae West in her 1933 movie I’m No Angel.

I think a lot about being on track, or not. Here are two of my own examples regarding chocolate and heart.

I confess – I can drift. When presented with chocolate cake with chocolate icing, chocolate sauce and chocolate ice cream, I also drift.

In 2000 I had a heart attack and was very tired. I was supposed to get a lot of exercise and I really did not want to. Why rush? I would have preferred to drift, but as it turned out I was very motivated to proceed – I wanted to recover completely and in just 10 weeks I wanted to take a plane to Israel where my son was to be married. My doctor would not let me go unless I had sufficiently recovered.

So I walked across the ICU room within hours of my triple bypass surgery – the longest and hardest walk of my life. I went on the treadmill at rehab – I became a regular Snow White in my exercising. I ended up making the flight, and I had a great time at the wedding.

It helped that I really, really wanted to succeed and go to the wedding. And my health insurance would pay for a rehabilitation program that had a good track record. I just had to show up and do my very best.

I was extremely fortunate to have my wife and friends who constantly encouraged me and helped me celebrate my small triumphs that added up over time. My staff at work encouraged me to stay home and work on healing before coming back to the office.

Once I formed the habit of continual exercise, I have since then found it easier to continue. I am probably in my best shape ever as I set and achieve new health goals for weight and aerobic strength.

There was also some luck involved, because my body responded well to the exercise regimen. But the hard work helped with the luck. It was easier for me to be Snow White when I had all of these things going for me.

So why do I share these stories with you? Well, I think about my future challenges and wonder whether or not I will rise to meet them. Yes, my doctor told me several years ago, very dramatically, to exercise or die. I chose to exercise. So too had my father been told at age 40 to stop smoking or die. He stopped and lived another great 50 years.

I have seen others with challenges, even faced with similar ultimata. Some rise to meet them; others do not. So which choice will you and I make? What can we learn from our past experiences that will encourage us to be all that we can be?
